"Sýnir," or "Visions" in Icelandic, is the result of a photographic expedition to Iceland self-organized by graduates of the 11th edition of the Sputnik Photos Mentoring Programme following the conclusion of our studies. Exasperated by over-tourism and the increasing commercialization of travel to Iceland, "Sýnir" is my attempt to document an alternative, more esoteric vision of Iceland. As a foreign traveler, my aim was not to "capture" nor "take" images to then "bring back" home, but rather use the medium of photography to gaze into the past and present of a new place, ultimately exploring the universal meanings, warnings, and predictions of the visions discovered. A selection of photos from "Sýnir" is part of the photo zine "Breiðafjörður," self-published in 2023 by graduates of the 11th edition of the Sputnik Photos Mentoring Programme.
