Warsaw is home to a significant Palestinian diaspora as well as a Palestinian Embassy, (Poland recognized the Palestinian Declaration of Independence issued by the Palestinian National Council in 1988 and accepted that the Ambassador of the State of Palestine be the extraordinary ambassador to Poland since 2000.) A solidarity demonstration was held at the Palestinian Embassy on 16 May 2021 in response to an Israeli bombing campaign of the Gaza Strip and the forced resettlement of Palestinians in the West Bank.
A number of regular demonstrations occurred after the 7 October 2023 terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israeli military and civilians and the subsequent Israeli bombings of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip as well as continued violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. The demonstrations were co-organized by the Palestinian diaspora and Polish activist groups, including Polish Jews who oppose the actions of the state of Israel. The rallies and marches consistently called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, an immediate halt to the bombing of civilian targets, a permanent solution for peace, and the decolonization of the state of Israel.
The protests culminated in a student occupation of a park on the University of Warsaw campus in May, 2024. The student-led coalition of activists demanded that the university break all ties with academic and corporate partners in Israel that were known to have ties with the Israeli military-industrial complex or were known to be supporting the continued occupation of Palestinian territory.
When negotiations with the university's rector broke down, the students moved the protest camp to the square in front of the rector's office. The rector responded by calling on police to enter the campus and forcefully evict the protesting students. This was the first time police entered the campus since the violent crackdowns of student protests against the communist regime in the 1980s. The police crackdown on campus provoked widespread condemnation of university policy as well as further demonstrations for the end of war and occupation in Palestine outside the closed gates of the university campus.
